Virtual All-State Etude Classes

Summer 2026

Our Virtual All-State Etude Classes are designed to help students learn the foundations of this year’s All-State etudes. Classes will take place once per week for two hours (see schedule below), via Zoom. Focus will be on underlying technique concepts, learning fingerings, addressing bowing and style considerations, and strategies for preparation. Taught by Andrew Goins, whose bass students have consistently earned chairs in All-State ensembles.

!!! ENROLLMENT IS LIMITED !!!

Classes are designed to be taken as an ongoing series, rather than a single or only a few classes. Students may register even if they will need to miss a class due to travel or other commitments.

NOTE: students should consider whether you are ready to focus on etudes of this level before registration. While no specific requirements will be enforced, students should feel comfortable playing two-octave scales and have some experience working in thumb position, or you may find that these classes will move too fast.

Materials

All participants will receive a copy of Andrew Goins’s edited etudes. Learning these fingerings will be a focus in the classes.

Technology Requirements

Classe will take place on Zoom. Participants will have the best experience using the largest screen available to you. You’ll need to be able to set up where you can fit from the bridge to nut of your bass in the frame, with lighting that allows you to be clearly seen on screen. Participants will be muted much of the time, and should use headphones to hear instruction clearly. While not required, a quality USB or external microphone can be helpful for any times where participants are unmuted.

Cost

Cost is $200 for the full series of classes, which works out to only $25 per class! Participants will receive instructions for payment via Venmo or Zelle after registration. Other options can be considered on an individual basis. Refunds for cancellation will be possible provided someone on the waiting list is able to take your spot.
